Having spent the first half of 2004 in a Virginia psychiatric hospital, Dan Penta returned to New York City that Autumn. Joining friend and collaborator Scott Fragala, a professional jazz session bassist and Manhattan School of Music graduate, he set forth to build a forum for his dark compositions. Playing their first show on Halloween night 2004, Cockroach formed with four other friends and musicians, . Subsequently a six song demo was recorded and residency taken for January 2005 at SideWalk Cafe in the East Village. Hook driven and lyrically centered, Cockroach is a folk rock band with a tender black heart. Cellist Crystal Madrilejos and backing vocalist Angela Carlucci comprise the adorably haunting duo the Babyskins. Brent Cole was the drummer for antifolk darlings the Moldy Peaches, and currently leads the math rock band Wooden Ghost. Backing vocalist Amy Hills performs original songs with her band the Thrift Store Symphony.
